Birds of Sub-Saharan Africa
The continent of Africa is second only to South America in terms of numbers of bird species. This gallery showcases a few of the more than 2,100 bird species found in sub-Saharan Africa which covers most of the Afrotropics faunistic zone. The northern boundary of the zone is around 20 degrees north in latitude, running through the centre of the Sahara Desert. Photographs of birds in north Africa can be found in a separate gallery for Bird of the Western Palearctic.
