Egypt
The photographs in this gallery were all taken in the Red Sea Governorate of Egypt. Most tourists do not venture far from the beaches of their all-inclusive Red Sea hotels, but over the duration of several trips I have travelled extensively along the whole 1,000 km length of the Red Sea coast from Zafarana in the north to El-Shalateen in the south.
I have explored mines, quarries, forts and ports from Roman times, ancient monasteries, more recently abandoned phosphate and gold mines, and the largest camel market in Africa at El Shalateen. Along the way I have visited almost all the modern resorts on the coast, staying at many, and have travelled through the Red Sea mountains into the Eastern Desert and amongst the mangrove at Wadi Gemal.
I enjoyed meeting and spending time with Egyptian people on my travels, particular the Al Ma’aza and ‘Ababda bedouin who were very hospitable. This gallery comprises of photographs of some of the people I encountered.
